See Photos of Goth Wall Slicks from Our Facebook Contest Winner

Here’s a little DIY decorating story about our Facebook contest winner, Dani from the United Kingdom. She recently sent us a photo from her room redesign she did using Goth Wall Slicks. Danielle, a young college student, is actually quite a great Do-It-Yourself decorator! Right now, she’s living in a shared house, so, her personal space is her bedroom. She really wanted her room to reflect her unique personality which she calls “not a girly girl but not a tomboy either.”

She painted her walls a lovely light lilac color and kept them mostly plain so it wouldn’t make her small space feel cramped. Just a few pictures and a mirror for accents, and underneath the mirror is a shelf. It was the swirly black metal shelf brackets that inspired her accessories and why the Goth wall decals were a perfect fit and really got her creative juices flowing once she won the contest. With her “swirly” design in mind, she found great bedding that was black and white with swirls and flowers (very similar to the gothic decals.)
“Because the majority of my furniture is dark I wanted to keep the room feeling light so opted for white woodwork - skirting boards, door and the built in wardrobe doors,” Danielle tells us. “The room was certainly lighter but the wardrobe doors seemed so blank and boring I really wanted to spice them up. Looking through your web site I saw the gothic decals and instantly had idea’s running through my head, waiting in eager anticipation I drew up sketches of my room, ordered a few new pieces of furniture (nothing fancy just a bookcase and a bedside table, and a few accessories like a candlestick) then as soon as the decals arrived I set to work and using the decals brought the wardrobe doors to life.”

Here’s Danielle’s photo of her wardrobe doors embellished with wall slicks!

Danielle also went on to say, “I was shocked firstly by how easy the decals were to use, but also how effective they were in transforming the doors. From dull brown wood to magnificent in less than half an hour!”
We’re so excited the Goth Wall Slicks worked for you, Danielle and thanks for sharing your DIY decorating story with us!

DIY Decorating in 30 Minutes or Less

If you’ve been hesitant to take on that home decorating project due to the time commitment, we have an idea that will bring you beautiful results in 30 minutes, or less. Use Wall Slicks wall decals from Modern Wall Graphics. Wall Slicks are quick and easy to apply, just peel and stick! No artistic or technical skill is required. Depending on the size of decal you choose, most can be applied to one wall in about 30 minutes. It can even take less time, depending on the number of decals you’ve selected. For example, if you just wanted to put a cluster of Sea Shell decals as an accent in your bathroom, that would definitely be a quick project. Don’t forget to save the backings your Wall Slicks come on, in case you need to re-position or plan to remove them in the future. You’ll want to keep your applicator tool in a handy spot as well.

As you’re planning your project, keep in mind that Accent Packs contain enough decals to decorate 2-3 areas of a room. Whereas the Wall Packs contain enough decals to create a pattern wallpaper look on 1-2 walls of a room, depending on how closely the decals are placed. We are calculating an average room being 8 feet tall and 12 feet long in size. If you are looking to put up a few Accents around the room, this can definitely be accomplished in a 30 minute time-frame. You’ll want to allow more time if you plan to decorate with one of our Wall Packs and achieve a wall paper like look. We would estimate that a project like that would require several hours considering you’ll want to take the time to measure and line the decals up in a straight line using the spacer dots to mark your spot before applying the decals. Remember, once you apply a few, you’ll get the hang of it and be quicker with each one. Before you know it, you’re done in no time. Even the kids can help!

More intricate and larger Wall Slicks may require additional time to apply as well, but, in general, you can have a complete look in just 30 minutes. So, don’t wait to get your decorating project underway. You can have beautiful walls in just minutes with Wall Slicks.

Filed under: Hollywood decorating, DIY decorating, Wall Slicks — admin @ 1:26 am

We’ve been so lucky to have the opportunity to meet so many celebrities lately and their response to Wall Slicks has been amazing. Hollywood just loves DIY decorating with Wall Slicks wall decals. Jai Rodriguez from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy fame twittered me to say that the new owner of his home loved them so much, he sold his Bird Branch Wall Slicks along with the house!

Allison Sweeney, daytime soap opera actress and host of NBC’s primetime TV show “The Biggest Loser”, has our Dots design, and both the Polka Dots and Circles were featured in the swag bags of Brittany Curran’s Retro 50’s Bash in May. There was even a contest giveaway in CosmoGirl, GirlsLife, Popstar! Magazine, JustJaredJr.com and OceanUp with a chance to win the bag (which had Wall Slicks inside).

Debby Ryan’s pick for her Sweet 16 birthday party was Say It custom sayings with “Live, Laugh, Love”. You can see it on her lap in this YouTube video from her party (about half way through).

Budget DIY Room Makeover

Looking to save money on your next decorating project? You don’t have to buy a store full of furniture to change the look of your room. With a little creative thinking, you can re-use and re-purpose furniture and other things you already have to make that room shine. Follow these steps for some ideas that will inspire you, save money and get those creative juices flowing.

  1. Assess
Take a good look at the furniture you already have, in EVERY room: Tables, chairs, couch… every piece in your entire house. Don’t forget the pieces you’ve hidden away in the garage. Is it working where you have it? Is it the right size for the space it is in now? Would it be better in the room you are re-decorating? Is it worn and needs repairs you can do (ie. Fabric fraying, wood a little dinged, paint chipping). Quick fabric and paint changes can re-fresh tired furniture, so, don’t throw it away!
  2. Review
Look around at the room you want to re-do. What pieces should be taken out? Can you take a piece of furniture and turn in on its side (like a bookshelf)? How about painting? Paint is not just for walls, though that will also help your budget makeover, furniture can also benefit from a paint job too (just remember to sand off the old paint or stain first). And, draping fabric, scarves or table cloths over end tables, chairs or even book shelves can also re-fresh tattered furniture. You can also DIY and recover fabric chairs with a little effort.
  3. Swap With Friends
Can’t quite get the look you want with the furniture you already have? Visit your friends and neighbors and suggest a furniture swap. (Don’t forget to check their garage too). They’ll get a great piece to update their space and you’ll have something “new” to complete your look.
  4. Repaint and Rearrange
Definitely repaint your walls as that is the easiest way to change the look of a room. And, don’t be afraid of color. The room will seem much more professionally decorated if you choose a color that is not plain old white. Then, rearrange by taking everything out of the room and starting over with the new furnishings you’ve discovered around the house or from friends. Place larger items first and fill in with the smaller pieces.
  5. Accessorize
Check you closets for items you haven’t used in years, such as pillows, throws, remnant fabric, even an old skirt can become a new pillow with a little sewing, or, cut the seam and drape it over the furnishings. Rearrange items from another room to the one you’re working on if it’s better suited for the color and style you’ve chosen. Decorating items are everywhere in your house already, even in your clothes closet. You know how much you loved your favorite scarf or skirt when you bought it, maybe you haven’t worn it in awhile and it’s time to re-purpose it and enjoy it in your home decorating!

If you limit yourself to what you can work with, you’ll find you end up with great results. Putting parameters around your decorating project helps you come up with something unique and different, all because you didn’t go with your first choice and just run out and buy it. You don’t have to spend money to end up with a beautiful look. It just takes planning and time to think about the best way to use what you already have. So, be creative, re-use, re-purposing and change it up. Get those creative juices flowing and have fun decorating.

Professional Look to DIY Decorating

Everyone wants a beautifully decorated home, and it’s great to save money during the process. You can achieve a professionally decorated look in your home even if you do-it-yourself. These basic tips will serve for any room in your house: kitchen, dining room, living room, kids room, baby nursery, bed room and bath room. Try these suggestions for a complete look you’ll be happy with every day and proud to show off at your next gathering:

  1. Paint! Yes, it’s simple, but, just a paint color can change the entire mood of your house and it’s very easy to do in a weekend. Go to the home improvement store and browse all the paint chips available. Purchase 3 – 4 small cans of the colors you are considering. Paint a small patch, (about 6” square), of each color you like in the desired room. Once it dries, look at it for a few days or a week, during different times a day (because lighting effects the color), and see if it conveys the feeling you intended. When you’ve found the one you like, paint the whole wall. You can also paint just the top or bottom half of a wall, and cut the middle visually with wood molding or even wall decal stripes or borders.
  2. Accessorize. Keep those paint chips you started with and look at the tints (adding white) and shades (adding black) to help you find coordinating colors for room accents. Accents can be a variety of things: pillows, rugs, throw blankets, shelf accessories like candles and vases, etc… Decide if you like a monochromatic theme which is tints and shades of one color (like blue), or pick 2 - 3 colors in a similar value that complement each other (check your color wheel) and stick with just those 3 to achieve a harmonious look (ie. Blue, peach (a tint of orange which is blues complimentary color) and a warm yellow (yellow is right next to orange on the color wheel).
  3. Add Accents. Hang artwork such as posters or paintings or even a rug draped over a dowel rod. Or, try something new by using wall decals that look like stencil painting. It’s easy to do and with Wall Slicks brand decals, you can re-position them if you make a mistake. They come in 40 colors and a multitude of designs to accent any color or theme you’ve chosen. You can even frame them for completely different look. Just some of the design styles include: modern, country, nature, classic, high style, and kids (teens, tweens and babies).

Get creative! If you’re not sure where to start, pull photos you like from magazines, and keep a “decorating binder” for inspiration. You can tear out sheets because you liked a certain color, or found inspiration in a nature scene, or even saw a look in a decorating magazine that was just want you had in mind: colors, accents, furniture, etc…. Keep the binder of images with you when doing your shopping at the home improvement or decorating store so you don’t forget the colors and theme you are going for. The possibilities are endless when you do it yourself. Tap into your creativity and create a beautiful room today.

Decorating Made Easy

If you want to change the look of your room, or even enhance a style you already have, Wall Slicks decals is the answer. Not only can use it on your walls, but also on your windows and even plastic or metal items. Because it can be applied to so many surfaces, and is available in so many sizes and colors, it makes pulling together a complete look quick and easy. Here’s some examples on how to do it yourself:

In the Kitchen:

  1. Use on the walls for the main focal point.
  2. Add smaller accent pieces to the windows or sliding doors.
  3. Complete the look with additional accent pieces on plain color plastic placemats, trash cans or even on the fridge itself.
  4. Decorate a clock face with decals.
  5. Frame the decals for a completely different look.

In the Kids Room:

  1. Use on the walls as a mural, main focal point or to simulate a wallpaper border near the ceiling.
  2. Perfect for over the crib where you might be concerned framed artwork could fall.
  3. Lay the decal on white or colored cardboard or mat board and frame it in a picture frame.
  4. Use smaller accent pieces on plain plastic storage boxes for added flair.
  5. Put designs on the plastic diaper pail, or outside of the crib.

Down the Hallway:

  1. Use on a piece of clear substrate, shine a light behind, and mount to wall to create a unique wall sconce.
  2. Frame them in individual small frames for a repeated design in a multitude of colors, or just one color repeated, or a monochromatic color scheme.
  3. Create depth by choosing the same design in different colors light to dark and layer them.

If you have an area in your room that needs more privacy and safety like a window, sliding door, privacy screen or clear plastic shower curtain, Wall Slicks are perfect for that too. You can even use them on car door, windows and bikes.

To add finishing touches to the room, consider an accent rug, pillows, a blanket throw or placemats in coordinating colors to pull all the elements together. It’s quick and easy and you’ll be done in no time and ready to entertain.
