Three Steps to Define Your Decorating Style – Vintage

Finally, the last decorating style we will discuss in our series Three Steps to Define Your Decorating Style will be the Vintage style. Last time we discussed the Cozy decorating style and in this article we will discuss what it means to have a Vintage Style.

Being vintage in your decorating shows that you have a rich, layered style. Flea market find combined with antiques and diverse accessories will thrive together. Furnishings that are collectible (like Grandma’s teacups), look timeworn (like a Persian rug) or handmade really make this style sing.

If you are vintage, you’ll want to decorate with:

  • Lots of rich wall art and accents everywhere, even on the furnishings
  • Jewel tones combined with more muted washed out colors
  • Furniture with shape and intricacy
  • A mix of fabrics throughout the room and windows, ie.) tapestries, paisleys, and jacquards
  • Embellished lamps and crystal chandeliers
  • Botanicals, florals and folksy items
  • A mix of antique and newer items that work together

Wall Slicks that go well with this style are: Paisley wall stickers, Rococo wall decals and our Bird Branch, Blossoms and Botanicals wall stickers.

Three Steps to Define Your Decorating Style – Cozy

Now we move on to an article addressing the Cozy Decorating style. This is another installment in our Three Steps to Define Your Decorating Style series. Last time we discussed the Modern decorating style and in this article we will discuss what it means to have a Cozy Style.

Being cozy in your decorating has a relaxed and inviting look. It’s warm, traditional and built for daily activities and visits from family and friends. You’ll find influences from English and early-American furniture designs popping up and even farmhouse, cottage and country can be a part of this style. Furnishings that are weathered and wear well keep this look very livable.

If you are cozy, you’ll want to decorate with:

  • Solid textiles
  • Solid furnishings that can stand up to lots of wear
  • Plush upholstery, even slipcovers
  • Sofas with squared or rolled arms
  • Natural fabrics like wool or cotton for upholstery, pillows and drapes
  • Simple stripes
  • Muted and unfussy florals
  • Warm wood tones that look weathered or distressed

Wall Slicks that go well with this style are: Stripes wall stickers, Sea Shells wall decals and our Bloom Florals wall stickers.

Three Steps to Define Your Decorating Style – Modern

It’s time to talk about the modern decorating style. This is another installment in our Three Steps to Define Your Decorating Style series. Last time we discussed the Classic decorating style and in this article we will discuss what it means to have a Modern Style.
Being modern decorator is a fresh, fun and contemporary. The look is edgy, urban and colorful. The furnishings are kept simple and the eyes are drawn to bold accents and colors. Images to inspire you could be a downtown loft, a Modern Art museum and even architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
If you are modern, you’ll want to decorate with:

  • Clean lined furniture with no embellishments on the legs.
  • Strong blocks of color
  • Geometric and abstract patterns (easy to layer and create with Wall Slicks)
  • Boxy shaped sofas
  • A mix of natural wood colors both light and dark

Wall Slicks that go well with this style are: Checkers wall stickers, Mechanix wall decals and our Zebra Stripes wall stickers.

And with over 40 colors to choose from, finding just the right bold color for your room will be a snap.

How to Save on Home Décor

Need some great money saving decorating ideas? We’ve got tips on how you can give your space a face lift without breaking the bank! Read on for budget DIY decorating ideas:

  • Clearance and “As-Is”
Ever looked at the clearance section of your favorite store? You can find great deals on discontinued items and some “As-Is” merchandise that may have a bit of a scratch. Even if it is missing a knob, you can replace that yourself and save up to 70%!
  • Buy from Art Students
Visit your local college to find art available by art students and save money on original art. There’s even an online web site called Ugallery.com where you can find artwork from colleges nationwide. There’s a large selection available for under $100 or less.
  • Hire a Carpenter
Need a no-frills furniture item like a bookcase? Consider finding a local carpenter to make it for you. If you paint or stain it yourself, you’ll save even more.
  • Shop Online for Vintage Deals
Looking for antiques to complete your look? Instead of scouring your local resale shops, go online and try shopgoodwill.com. Do a search for other web sites for deals on Persian rugs and even pottery.

Wall decals can also complete any look and with a variety of sizes available, there’s sure to be something to fit any budget. Also, depending on how much of your wall you want to cover, you can even find individual wall stickers for under $10. You can save even more by ordering with a friend to share a wall pack or split shipping costs. Happy decorating.

Three Steps to Define Your Decorating Style – Part 1

Filed under: decorating style, wall decals, DIY decorating, Wall Slicks — admin @ 5:26 pm

Decorating style! Everyone has one, but, I bet if someone asked you to define it, you’d have a hard time explaining exactly what it is, you just know what you like. Home decorating is an extension of your personal style. It’s all about who you are and what makes you feel comfortable, intuitively. If you want to get in touch with your personal style, follow these three steps:

  1. Review What you Have
It’s time to take a good hard look around your house and make an honest list about what you love and don’t like about the current furnishings and décor. Create a list of “Keep” or “Replace” and walk around your house (or just the room you want to change) with a pad and pencil and put every piece of furniture and tchotchke into one of those two columns. Go with your gut on how each item makes you feel and you won’t go wrong.
  2. Find Your Favorite Things
Look around not only your home furnishings, but, your clothes and even your jewelry and put all your favorite things into a big pile (or take digital photos of them, then print them all out to view). Pay particular attention to items that make you feel beautiful, bring you joy and inspire good feelings.
  3. Use Your Imagination
Find a place where you can be uninterrupted for 10 minutes and close your eyes to imagine places you love and why you love to be there. This could be a vacation spot you visited, a scene from a movie or even a piece of artwork you like. With this in mind, envision what your dream home would look like. Do not put any constrains of cost or location on it. You can take this even further and imagine the most beautiful dress, jewelry and shoes you might wear to a formal occasion. Write down your answers or find images in magazines that match your ideas.

Now that you have some input on your personal style, look for commonality among the results from the three exercises to help identify your decorating style. This can be tricky, but, the basic themes will be:

  • Classic Style – Timeless Elegance
  • Modern Style – Color, Contrast and Clean Lines
  • Cozy Style – Comfort and Warmth
  • Vintage Style – Eclectic, Quirky, Curvy and Historic

We’ll post more details on each style in a future blog post. Until then, happy DIY decorating from your friends at Wall Slicks, the Original Wall Decal Store.

Wall Slicks Really Stick – Don’t Settle for Wall Stickers that Peel Away

I’m sure you’ve seen wall stickers at your local store in the home decorating aisle or crafting section. There are other companies, besides Modern Wall Graphics the Original Wall Decal Store, out there offering cute designs to accent and DIY decorate your home or kids rooms and you may have been excited to try them on your wall. But, I’m willing to guess that you were disappointed with the result, and not because of the design you chose or where you placed it, but, because a few days or weeks after you installed it, the sticker started to peel up and away from the wall. Even pressing it back down against the wall again didn’t help, right? This is probably because the wall decal you purchased was made of plastic.

Wall Slicks wall decals are not made of plastic, but rather a malleable vinyl that not only adheres well to the wall, but, follows any contours it may have so that the wall sticker almost looks like a painted stencil when finished and not a sticker at all. The vinyl material in Wall Slicks also has a matte finish and that means it won’t look shiny, again helping it blend in with the wall, looking more like it was professionally painted on.

The great thing about Wall Slicks is that once you place it on the wall, it stays there until you are ready to remove it. No peeling away from the wall, ever. Just keep the sheet it comes on along with the clear top sheet and if you ever need to reposition or remove the decal, you’re all set. It’s strong enough to stay put, but, easy enough to take down with no residue left behind. Who could ask for anything more!

Color Theory 101 – How to Choose the Right Colors when Decorating

Filed under: color theory, wall decals, DIY decorating, Wall Slicks — admin @ 6:00 pm

Ready to add some color to your home but you don’t know how? Here’s a few tips on color theory to ensure the colors you choose reflect your style and convey just the right mood in your space.

  • Choose Colors of Equal Intensity
You can mix reds, oranges and yellow’s together easily when the colors are of equal intensity (that means how vibrant they are.) Try poppy, tangerine and marigold! If you want some color but are afraid it will overwhelm or dominate your room, try a more muted shade.
  • Consult the Color Wheel
Not sure if the colors go together? Look at a color wheel. Shades that are analogous (side by side on the color wheel), are pretty much foolproof together. Ie) Navy, teal and lime green. Want the look to really stand out, complimentary colors (those that are opposite each other on the color wheel) make each color more vibrant. Ie.) Yellow and purple.
  • Primary Colors Pop
Remember in grade school when you learned that red, yellow and blue are primary colors? Use them together for a striking look, just make sure not to use them all equally. Choose the 2 you like the best and use them the most. Allow the 3rd color to be just in accents.
  • Colors have Weight
Colors carry visual weight. Try using 2 parts of 1 color in combination with 1 part of another instead of using half of each for a dynamic look. Ie.) true blue and yellow mustard

With over 40 colors of Wall Slicks wall decals to choose from, there’s sure to be color that can turn your space from drab to vibrant, quickly and easily for any DIY decorating project.
