Color Theory 101 – How to Choose the Right Colors when Decorating

Filed under: color theory, wall decals, DIY decorating, Wall Slicks — admin @ 6:00 pm

Ready to add some color to your home but you don’t know how? Here’s a few tips on color theory to ensure the colors you choose reflect your style and convey just the right mood in your space.

  • Choose Colors of Equal Intensity
You can mix reds, oranges and yellow’s together easily when the colors are of equal intensity (that means how vibrant they are.) Try poppy, tangerine and marigold! If you want some color but are afraid it will overwhelm or dominate your room, try a more muted shade.
  • Consult the Color Wheel
Not sure if the colors go together? Look at a color wheel. Shades that are analogous (side by side on the color wheel), are pretty much foolproof together. Ie) Navy, teal and lime green. Want the look to really stand out, complimentary colors (those that are opposite each other on the color wheel) make each color more vibrant. Ie.) Yellow and purple.
  • Primary Colors Pop
Remember in grade school when you learned that red, yellow and blue are primary colors? Use them together for a striking look, just make sure not to use them all equally. Choose the 2 you like the best and use them the most. Allow the 3rd color to be just in accents.
  • Colors have Weight
Colors carry visual weight. Try using 2 parts of 1 color in combination with 1 part of another instead of using half of each for a dynamic look. Ie.) true blue and yellow mustard

With over 40 colors of Wall Slicks wall decals to choose from, there’s sure to be color that can turn your space from drab to vibrant, quickly and easily for any DIY decorating project.

Bathroom Decorating Ideas

Need bathroom decorating ideas? Apartment bathrooms are often small and dark with no windows. Condominium bathrooms often fair no better. If you live in a house you probably have more than one bathroom, and whether they’re large and have lots of window lighting or back to being small and dark, bathrooms are still a decorating challenge.

Wall Slicks wall decals are the answer. These wall decals are thin so they will stick to just about any surface, making them perfect for a bathroom. They are also made with a matte finish. That means that when they are applied to a surface they don’t look like shiny stickers. Instead, the design blends into the surface and looks like it was painted on by a professional, which will give your bathroom a professional interior designer look.

Wall Slicks offers many ideas for your bathroom design. Classic Sea Shell wall decals will give your bathroom a timeless look, and these wall decals come in an assortment of colors from butter to emerald, silver or gold, and everything in between. For a fun whimsical look use the underwater sea life wall decals, complete with waves and sea plants. Speaking of plants, why not turn your bathroom into a beautiful botanical garden? There are many floral wall sticker and plant designs from which to choose.

You can always think do a contemporary modern theme and choose from the several geometric wall stickers available. It’s easy by choosing one bold color, such as red, for the wall decals and accessorizing with only that color throughout the bathroom for a monochromatic look. Or, make it easy by adding a neutral color, such as white or black, in with the bold color for added punch.

If the bathroom is used mainly by your children take a look at the wall decal designs that normally you would use to decorate a child’s bedroom, and instead use them in the bathroom. Or carry the wall decal theme you’re already using in their bedroom on into the bathroom. Nobody ever said you can’t have fun decorating a bathroom!

Super Decorating Ideas to Inspire You

Filed under: professionally decorated look, wall decals, DIY decorating — admin @ 6:08 pm

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and before the game starts, I’m thinking of some “Super” decorating ideas to inspire you! Decorating does not have to be hard or take a lot of your time. Here’s a few quick ideas to get you started so you can create a look you’ve always wanted. And, the best part is, you don’t have to re-do the whole room from top to bottom to make a change. Pick a section (like the walls) or area (new rugs) and just get started.

Magazine Research
The best way to get ideas for your home decorating is to look in magazines. Pick your favorite decorating magazine and start keeping a file of looks, colors, patterns and textures you like. You may not see how it will all come together at first, but, collecting images of what you like will help you define your style.

Review and Find Commonality
Once you have your file folder of images you like, review them and see if you can find a common theme or pattern. Do you like, stripes? Is the color Blue what speaks to you? How about flowers? You’ll start to see what you’re drawn to and you can apply that to the area of your room you want to change (ie. Walls, floors, accents, paint, etc… )

DIY Decorating
Now that you’re ready to get down to some “super” DIY decorating, see if you have anything already around the house that you can either move from one room to another, or, even pull out of a closet or garage storage. For example, maybe you’ve decided that you want a room that has blue accents. Do you have a throw blanket you can drape over the sofa? If so, start there and then find a few accent pillows to match it and you can easily pull together a coordinated look.

Think about doing the change in stages so it does not seem too overwhelming. Maybe start with the accent pieces this weekend, and next weekend move to the walls. If painting seems like too much work, you can easily change the look of your room with wall decals. They look as if they’ve been painted on and add a professional touch to any DIY decorating project. Plus they remove just as easy as they install, if you want to change the look again down the road.
