Five Green Nursery Decorating Tips

So you want to go “green” in the nursery? Great idea! Decorating the baby nursery with items that are safe for them and ecologically friendly is good for their health and the environment. Here’s 5 tips to get you started:

  1. Organic Bedding
Start with organic bedding, blankets and quilts for the crib. Babies spend up to 70% of their early life sleeping and playing in the crib, so, make sure the mattress is also non-toxic. Once you’ve chosen the bedding color it is easy to select accents and the color theme for the rest of the nursery décor.
  2. Avoid Particle Board
Avoid any baby furniture created with particle board because it contains formaldehyde a volatile organic compound (VOC). In addition to the wood, be sure the paints or varnish used on the furniture is VOC free. The best way to avoid this would be to find nursery furniture made from sustainable and renewable sources such as bamboo.
  3. Natural Fiber Rug
Choose a natural fiber rug made from bamboo, hemp, cork, or wool and be sure they used environmentally sound dyes for the coloring.
  4. VOC Free Paint
Paint is one of the leading causes for indoor air pollution. Paints release low level toxic emissions into the air for years after application. New VOC free paints solve this problem and come in a variety of colors to match your nursery décor.
  5. Wall Decals
For a special touch to your nursery decorating, try Wall Slicks wall decals, a “green” certified product. The vinyl and adhesive in the wall stickers have no odor or volatile chemical content and come in over 40 colors and come in numerous designs and styles!

Get the Look of Wall Stripes without Paint

Filed under: wall stickers, wall decals, DIY decorating, Wall Slicks — admin @ 7:39 pm

Do you want the look of wall stripes in your home, but don’t want to paint or apply wall paper? There is a solution! Vinyl wall stickers can give you the same look without the hassle of paint or the mess of wall paper. If you can peel and stick, you can apply wall decals. Just follow these simple steps and you can easily complete that DIY project and achieve that striped look you’ve always wanted:

  1. Decide on the Color
Depending on the color of your wall and the look you want to achieve, you may or may not have to paint the base wall to start. You can certainly apply your stripes to a white wall, or, consider a monochromatic look with tints or shades of one color such as a dark blue wall with light blue stripes. If your wall is already a color, you could also consider using white stripes.
  2. Determine the Width
Determine the width of the stripes you would like, keeping the proportion of the room in mind. Narrow stripes in a large room will get lost and wide stripes in a small room look out of proportion for the size of the space. Stripes Wall Decals come in 3 sizes: Pinstripes are .5” wide, Medium Stripes are 4” and Wide Stripes are 8”. For your convenience, all stripes are 8 feet tall, the height of a standard wall. Custom sizes are also available. Contact customer service for details.
  3. Keep them Straight
Decorating with stripes requires precision. You definitely want them to end up straight when you are finished. Use a laser level to ensure straight lines as you apply the spacer dots as placeholders to remember where you want to apply each stripe. Complete instructions are included in each package of Wall Slicks wall decals.

Tips for Budget Apartment Decorating

Filed under: apartment decorating, wall decals — admin @ 8:04 pm

Just moving into your first apartment and need ideas for decorating? Or, have you lived in your place for awhile but you need an apartment makeover? Here’s some budget decorating tips that will liven up your space while not breaking the bank.

Most apartments have all-white walls because many landlords do not allow residents to paint. But, don’t let that stifle your decorating sense! You can liven up a room with colorful curtains, pillows, lamps, candles, blankets, area rugs, and even wall decals.

How to Use Color
Warm colors help create a cozy feeling. These colors are: red-violet, red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, and yellow.
Cool make the space seem more spacious with a touch of elegance. These colors are: green, blue-green, blue, and blue-violet. White can have the same effect.
Depending on your style and the colors that convey the feeling you want, you can create a complete look just by sticking to a simple color palette. Just because you can’t paint the walls, does not mean you can’t paint your furniture! Stick to 2 – 3 colors that harmonize well together. You may even find some fabric or a rug as inspiration.

Bargain Furniture
Where can you find bargain furniture? Friends and family are a good place to start! Many people are storing unused end tables and chairs in their garage and would be happy for their furniture to find a new home in your space. Still need more? Try garage sales and thrift stores. Remember, fabric seat covers are easy to recover and faded wood furniture will pop with a coat of paint.

Keep it Simple
A small apartment will feel larger if you use cool colors, and minimal amounts of furniture. Avoid busy patterns that can overwhelm your room on items like curtains, tablecloths and bedspreads.

Try this Look
Sweeties Wall Decals
See how these Sweeties wall stickers make this room look complete by tying in with the red color of the pillow and bedspread? Just peel and stick to dress up a white wall with the look of wall paper, but no mess and permanence. Just as easy to remove as it is to install. Vinyl wall decals are easy to take down when you move and won’t leave residue on the walls like paper backed stickers. It’s an inexpensive designer look for you that will also keep the landlord happy.
