Professional Look to DIY Decorating
Everyone wants a beautifully decorated home, and it’s great to save money during the process. You can achieve a professionally decorated look in your home even if you do-it-yourself. These basic tips will serve for any room in your house: kitchen, dining room, living room, kids room, baby nursery, bed room and bath room. Try these suggestions for a complete look you’ll be happy with every day and proud to show off at your next gathering:
- Paint! Yes, it’s simple, but, just a paint color can change the entire mood of your house and it’s very easy to do in a weekend. Go to the home improvement store and browse all the paint chips available. Purchase 3 – 4 small cans of the colors you are considering. Paint a small patch, (about 6” square), of each color you like in the desired room. Once it dries, look at it for a few days or a week, during different times a day (because lighting effects the color), and see if it conveys the feeling you intended. When you’ve found the one you like, paint the whole wall. You can also paint just the top or bottom half of a wall, and cut the middle visually with wood molding or even wall decal stripes or borders.
- Accessorize. Keep those paint chips you started with and look at the tints (adding white) and shades (adding black) to help you find coordinating colors for room accents. Accents can be a variety of things: pillows, rugs, throw blankets, shelf accessories like candles and vases, etc… Decide if you like a monochromatic theme which is tints and shades of one color (like blue), or pick 2 - 3 colors in a similar value that complement each other (check your color wheel) and stick with just those 3 to achieve a harmonious look (ie. Blue, peach (a tint of orange which is blues complimentary color) and a warm yellow (yellow is right next to orange on the color wheel).
- Add Accents. Hang artwork such as posters or paintings or even a rug draped over a dowel rod. Or, try something new by using wall decals that look like stencil painting. It’s easy to do and with Wall Slicks brand decals, you can re-position them if you make a mistake. They come in 40 colors and a multitude of designs to accent any color or theme you’ve chosen. You can even frame them for completely different look. Just some of the design styles include: modern, country, nature, classic, high style, and kids (teens, tweens and babies).
Get creative! If you’re not sure where to start, pull photos you like from magazines, and keep a “decorating binder” for inspiration. You can tear out sheets because you liked a certain color, or found inspiration in a nature scene, or even saw a look in a decorating magazine that was just want you had in mind: colors, accents, furniture, etc…. Keep the binder of images with you when doing your shopping at the home improvement or decorating store so you don’t forget the colors and theme you are going for. The possibilities are endless when you do it yourself. Tap into your creativity and create a beautiful room today.

I love these ideas, especially about creating a decorating binder. Now when I see something I like, I’ll have it on file when I get that urge to redecorate a room. Great tips.
